Where are my books and projects saved?

Your books are saved in the browser you created them in, using its local storage (localStorage and IndexedDB). Nothing is uploaded to our servers on its own — which is exactly why your manuscript stays private by default.

The trade-off: a book made in Chrome on your laptop won't appear in Safari, or on your phone, or after you clear your browsing data. So:

  • To keep a permanent, portable copy, download the project file for each book (My Books → the ⬇ button). It's a single .json you can re-open anytime, anywhere — see How do I back up my project?
  • Or, signed in, press the button to back the book up to your account, so you can pick it up on another computer without carrying a file around.
  • To pick up a book you started earlier, open My Books in the same browser — see How do I return to a book?

If a book has vanished, start with My project disappeared.
