How do I back up my project?
Open My Books and click the ⬇ (download project file) button on the book. That saves a single .json file containing the entire project — cover, settings, your manuscript, everything.
Keep that file somewhere safe (cloud drive, external drive, or just your Documents folder). To restore or move it, use My Books → Open project file…
We recommend downloading a fresh project file whenever you finish a real chunk of work. Because books are stored in your browser, this file is your backup — if the browser's data is ever cleared, the project file is what brings the book back.
Or back it up to your account
If you're signed in, the ☁ button on a book card backs the whole project up to your account instead — cover, settings, front and back matter, and your manuscript. It's the same content as the project file, without a file to keep track of, and it's how you pick a book up on a different computer.
Two things to know: a backup expires 60 days after its last edit (opening it resets the clock), and you can hold up to 10 books this way. A Concierge delivery sits on its own shelf and gets 90 days.
The two aren't rivals — a downloaded project file is yours forever and needs no account, so it's still the one to keep for a finished book. See Where are my books saved? and Do you store my manuscript or cover files?
