How do I match my cover's colors?

Your back cover, spine, and text colors start out following your front-cover art — as soon as you add or change the image, they re-match automatically. The moment you pick a color yourself, that color sticks and stops following the art. (You can always click a Match button again to go back to matching.)

Match to front cover

The Front Cover, Spine, and Back Cover sections each have a Match to front cover button and a color palette below it. The palette shows the dominant colors pulled from your artwork as clickable swatches:

• Click a swatch to use that color — its hex code fills the field beside it.
• Type a hex code (e.g. #1f6f63) into the field, or use the small color preview next to it to pick any custom color.

Because the swatches are the actual top colors in your image, you can choose the one that reads best behind text — not just the single most-common color.

Background vs. text colors

• The palette sets the background fill for that panel (the back-cover background, and the spine background).
• Text colors are separate rows:
  • Text (in Back Cover) — the color of your blurb.
  • Spine text (in Spine) — the color of the title and author on the spine, independent of the blurb.

When you match a color, the tool automatically sets a readable text color (black on light backgrounds, white on dark) so nothing disappears. You can override any of these by hand.

Tips

• Pull a background color from your art, then nudge the text color to pure white or black for maximum contrast.
• A light spine with dark text (or vice versa) keeps the title legible on the shelf. See My spine is too narrow for text if the spine feels tight.
