Why a printed cover never lands exactly where you put it
Your proof arrives. The spine text sits a shade left of center. The front image has crept down. A thin line of the back color has come around onto the spine. Nothing is badly wrong, but nothing is quite where you put it.
This is the single fact behind most "my proof looks wrong" messages: a cover is printed flat on a sheet, then folded and cut down to a book. Printing is precise. Folding and cutting are mechanical, and mechanical means tolerance.
The order of operations is the whole explanation
Your wrap is not printed at book size. It is printed oversized on a larger sheet, wrapped or glued to the block, creased at the spine, and then trimmed square on three sides. Several machines touch it, and each registers against the last.
So the question is never whether the finished book matches your file exactly. It does not, on any copy, at any printer, at any price. The question is how far it moved and whether the design absorbs it.
The three ways it moves
- The wrap slides side to side. The whole printed sheet can sit a little left or right of where the folds were planned. Front artwork shifts one way, back artwork the other, and both spine folds move together.
- The fold misses the spine. The crease is aimed at the edge of the glued block. Land it slightly off and a sliver of your front cover wraps onto the spine, or a sliver of spine color appears on the front.
- The trim takes more from one edge. The blade is aimed at the trim line, not landing on it. Top and bottom can come out uneven, and the margin you left at the left edge is not the margin at the right.

What the allowances are actually for
The numbers you were told to build to exist precisely to eat this drift. They are not paperwork.
Bleed, 0.125 inches on every outside edge. That strip is there to be cut off, and to still be there when the blade lands a little inside the line. Artwork that stops at trim leaves a white sliver the moment anything moves.
No bleed at a spine fold. A fold is a crease, not a cut, so artwork simply continues across it. Adding an allowance there pushes the whole wrap out of position and makes the drift worse.
Safe area, about 0.25 inches inside the trim. Anything you cannot afford to lose — title, author name, logo, the last line of the blurb — sits inside that line, because the cut can come in. The full argument is in Bleed and safe area, explained once.

The spine is where drift becomes visible
A front cover can move a millimeter and nobody notices. A spine cannot, because a spine is narrow and the eye reads it against two hard folds.
The design that fails is a spine with a hard color change exactly at the fold — black spine, white front, the boundary sitting on the crease. On a real copy that boundary lands slightly off the crease, so a sliver of black shows on the front or a sliver of white shows on the spine. It reads as a printing defect. It is a design that left itself no room.
The designs that survive do one of two things. They wrap the color, carrying the spine color onto the front or back by a quarter inch or more, so a small miss only changes where an intentional band ends. Or they use wider blocks: bands, panels and rules sized in quarter inches rather than hairlines, so a small miss is a small proportion of something large.
The same logic applies to spine type. Centered text with clearance on both sides looks centered even when the panel has moved. Text set tight to one fold looks like a mistake as soon as it moves at all. Designing a spine people can read on a shelf covers the rest of that.
Design for the miss, not for the perfect cut
Ask one question of every element near an edge or a fold: if this moved a millimeter or two, would anyone be able to tell?
- Hairline borders are a trap. A 2 mm frame around the front becomes 3 mm on one side and 1 mm on the other, and the unevenness is obvious because both sides are visible at once. Make the border thick enough that the difference does not register, or leave it out.
- Do not put something on the spine that has to line up. Full-bleed spine artwork is fine. A logo that must sit exactly between the folds is not.
- Avoid aligning front artwork to back artwork across the spine. They are on opposite sides of two folds and will not stay in register.
- Check the design at a shift. Nudge your artwork a couple of millimeters in each direction and look again. Whatever breaks is the thing to change.
What to report, and what to accept
Accept a small, even drift: a spine slightly off, a front image a millimeter low, top and bottom margins a little unequal. That is the process working as designed, and no printer will replace a book for it.
Report it when the book is unsellable, and describe it in measurements. Worth a message: type cut through, the fold landing on the front or back panel rather than near the spine edge, a white unprinted strip where your artwork should have bled, or a shift large enough that the trim size itself is wrong.
Before you report anything, look at three or four copies. One odd copy in a batch is variation. The identical fault on all of them points at the file, and that you can fix. The proof came back wrong. Now what? separates the two.
