A cover isn't art — it's a signal. It has about one second to tell the right reader "this is your kind of book," at the size of a postage stamp. Everything else follows from that.

The thumbnail test

Shrink your cover to about 160 pixels tall and look at it. If the title doesn't read, nothing else about the cover matters — because that's the size almost every reader will see it at.

Typography and hierarchy

Your type isn't a label on top of the cover — on most working covers it is the design. What size, what order, and which faces belong to which genre.

Color and contrast

Color sets the genre before a reader registers a single object. Contrast decides whether your title is readable at all — and it's value contrast that matters, not color contrast.

Composition and negative space
