Why your cover prints darker than it looked

The proof arrives and it is wrong. Darker. Flatter. The blue that glowed is a navy, the shadow detail you spent an evening on is a solid black shape, and the whole thing looks like a photocopy of the cover you designed.

Almost nothing has gone wrong. You are looking at the difference between two ways of making color, and it catches nearly every author once.

A screen makes light; paper only reflects it

Your monitor is a grid of tiny lamps. It makes color additively — red, green and blue light mixed in different amounts, with all three at full producing white and all three off producing black. The brightness comes from the panel itself, and a modern screen throws a lot of it.

A printed cover makes color subtractively. Ink sits on a sheet that is already white and removes wavelengths from whatever light is falling on it. Four inks do the work: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The bare sheet is as bright as the cover ever gets, and every drop of ink from there on makes it darker.

So the page is not lit. It is lit by your room, which on a winter afternoon is a fraction of what your screen was doing.

The range is smaller, so colors get moved

Between them, those four inks on paper can reproduce a smaller range of colors than a bright screen can display. Not a slightly smaller one — noticeably smaller, and smallest exactly where screens are most impressive.

Every color in your file that falls outside what the ink can do is mapped to the nearest color that can be printed. Nobody asks you. The colors most often lost are the same ones every time:

  • Brilliant saturated blues. The single most common casualty. A vivid royal blue comes back as a respectable, slightly dull navy.
  • Electric greens. Anything that looks lit from behind.
  • Hot oranges and pure vivid reds. They print, but with the glow taken off.
  • Anything neon. Neon is a screen effect. There is no fluorescent ink in a standard print run.

Colors nearer the middle — earth tones, muted palettes, most skin tones, most photography that was not pushed in editing — move very little. This is why a restrained cover survives the trip to paper better than a saturated one.

The three things this does to a design

Dark colors gain density and shadows close up. Ink spreads slightly into the sheet, so dark tones print a little darker than specified and the steps between them compress. A near-black photograph with a figure just visible in the gloom becomes a black rectangle. Whatever lives in the deepest few percent of your image should be treated as lost.

Rich colors come back quieter. A saturated red that carried the cover on screen still reads as red, just with less voltage. If the design depended on that voltage, it now depends on nothing.

Fine distinctions disappear. Two dark tones a shade apart — a charcoal panel on a black field, a title in deep plum on deep blue — are separate on a backlit screen and identical on paper. If a reader has to notice a subtle difference for the cover to work, assume they will not.

Designing for it without a color-managed workflow

You do not need calibration hardware or a proofing setup to avoid the worst of this. You need a few habits.

  • Keep detail out of the deepest shadows. If something matters — a face, a horizon, a figure — lift it until it is clearly visible, then lift it again. Detail you can only just see on screen is detail you will not see at all.
  • Do not build a cover on one neon color. A design whose entire effect is an electric cyan is a design with no backup plan. Let shape, type and value carry it, and treat the color as a bonus.
  • Use real contrast, not a subtle one. Bold differences in lightness survive anything. See Color and contrast, which covers why value contrast is the one that decides legibility.
  • Dim your screen and look again. Turn the brightness down to something like a lit room and view the cover. It is a crude preview of what ink can do, and it is free.
  • Look at it on a phone. Different panel, different calibration, usually a warmer picture. Any cover that only works on one display is fragile.
  • Then order a physical proof. It is the only reliable test, because it is the only one printed on the machine that will print your book. See Order the proof. Then read it in daylight.

Paper and finish move it again

The sheet is part of the color. Cream stock is a warm, slightly yellow base, so everything printed on it drifts warm: whites are never white, and a pale cover reads as tinted. White stock is closer to neutral but still not the white of a screen.

Finish changes the apparent depth as much as the hue does. A gloss laminate makes blacks look deeper and colors look wetter. A matte laminate scatters light and reads flatter and softer, which is often the look people want and always a surprise on a dark cover. A proof is per printer, and per machine

There is no single answer to "how much darker". Two printers running the same file on the same nominal stock will not match each other, and two machines in the same plant drift apart over a maintenance cycle. That is normal tolerance, not a defect.

So a proof tells you about the printer that made it. If you are publishing the same book through more than one, proof it at each, and expect the copies to be cousins rather than twins.
